This Girl Chronically Rocks! Keisha Greaves talks Muscle Walk and Creating Fashion with a Purpose.

keisha2

As a former Fashion major, I have always been interested in those who forge their own path in the industry. It’s such a wonderful way for us to both express our own style, but to also reach others and inspire them to find their own unique flare. That’s where Keisha Greaves comes in. Not only do we share in common attending college for fashion and merchandising, but she is out here changing the game for fashion lovers with disabilities. Keisha is #BlackExcellence and #BlackGirlMagic plus a whole lot more!

keisha1Keisha grew up like any other girl. She was very active, despite being on the plus side. Keisha was a go getter, constantly on the move. One day, while in college, Keisha started to experience some strange neurological symptoms. Her leg would occasionally give out on her and she would sometimes experience strange feelings in her arms. After visiting with her doctor, she was referred to a neurologist. Soon after MRIs, muscle biopsies and various tests, Keisha was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in 2010.

keisha3Instead of giving up on life, Keisha sprang into action. She began to work on creating awareness for MD by speaking at events, fundraising, and now organizing the MDA Muscle Walk which takes place in Boston Commons. Keisha is also Massachusetts Brand Ambassador for MD and has created a T-Shirt line called Girls Chronically Rock. The graphics are her own designs and they do, in fact, rock! Keisha plans to expand her sizing to include plus sizes but also she’s working on developing a full line of clothing designed for people with disabilities.

keisha 6This is such an amazing concept! So far Tommy Hilfiger and Target are developing lines with the physically impaired in mind, but there’s plenty of room for this niche to expand. Keisha plans to carve out her space in this subcategory of fashion and if her designs are anything like the T shirts she creates for Girls Chronically Rock, I plan to grab a few pieces for my friends and family.

keisha5For now, you can catch Keisha Saturday May 19th at the MDA Muscle Walk in Boston Commons at 9am. It’s FREE y’all, so come thru and show your support for Keisha and those living with Muscular Dystrophy. Bring the family along! There will be face painting for the kids and food vendors for all! And if you have a good time at the MDA Muscle Walk, join Keisha again May 29th for the NEXTonSCENE Fundraising Night Out with Girls Chronically Rock from 6-9pm.

Here’s Lookin’ at You, Boo!

Recently I had the honor of reviewing Private Label Extensions 3D Mink Lashes. If you’re not familiar with Private Label Extensions, you can learn more about this wholesale company here. Today’s review is all about falsies.

I love a good lash, y’all. I love full, thick, sexy, fluttery lashes and PLE has exactly what I’m looking for. Now, I’ve often dreamed of owning my own beauty brand, so when I saw that these lashes were wholesale, I thought it would be a great idea to test drive them for future business plans. But far be it for me to deny my fellow beauty lovers the opportunity to get up on the come up, ya dig?

So I received Lola and Grace for review. I tried the Lola lash out in my most recent video, which you will see below. These lashes are sturdy, great for multiple use, flexible and comfortable. I love the volume of the more glamorous styles, but they also have more natural looks as well. I would definitely recommend these lashes for individual purchase as well as wholesale. PLE 3D Mink Lashes are affordable, at $13.50 per pair, so if you just want to rock some sexy lashes that aren’t $20 and up I’d say Private Label Extensions is a great place to stock up!

Get Your Instagram on with These Amazing Products

becca-first-light-primerI’ve been a huge fan of Becca Cosmetics for well over 2 years now. The first product I purchased, from the high end makeup brand, was the Ever Matte Shine-Proof Foundation. Not only was the shade match on point(I wear the shade Sienna), but I wasn’t the darkest shade (hard to come by even 2 years ago), and the formula was amazing! I became a loyal customer from day one. Since then, I’ve purchased their Complete Complexion Creme (full coverage foundation with a natural finish), their Matte Poreless Primer, Mineral Blush, and of course their Shimmering Skin Perfectors. Becca is a mainstay in my makeup collection.

becca-soft-light-powderWhen Influenster hit your girl up, via email, about the upcoming collaboration with Becca, I jumped at the chance to review their new products. I was lucky enough to receive the very first Becca & Influenster VoxBox and immediately started gagging at its contents. I received the First Light Priming Filter, the Soft Kabuki Brush, and the Soft Light Blurring Powder.

As an oily girl, I’ve often kept my distance from primers that illuminate the face, because my skin does that all by itself. But since this was given to me for review, I went full force and tested the primer on its own. I also used the brush provided to apply the setting powder and went to a vision board party in Boston (hosted by my girl Lisa A La Mode and blogger Actually Ashley). I wore the products for 6 hours before giving my final thoughts on each one. No touch ups of course, because I wanted to see how long my oily skin would remain radiant rather than KFCesque!

becca-kabuki-brushThe final verdict? I’m down for the idea of an illuminating filter mixed in with my more mattifying primers. I cannot wear the First Light Priming Filter on its own. I was a greasy it with your matte primers or skip it all together. As for the powder…she’s bae. I love the powder so much, ya’all! The brush is cute, I’m here for it. It’s soft enough not to move your foundation but also sturdy enough to properly buff in the powder.

Check out the video below for my full review of the #BECCABeautyBlur collection. Visit Sephora to purchase the primer, brush, and powder.

Top 10 Naturals Killin’ It with TWAs

The TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro), or very short cropped natural hair, is often the first stop for a natural’s hair journey (click here to find out why I big chopped). but sometimes we find there’s no reason to travel further down the road. The TWA can be a versatile, sexy, fun, funky expression of a woman’s personal style. Whether we play with color, fades, parts, or designs, the TWA looks amazing on any and all face shapes. And don’t let anyone tell you that the TWA isn’t office appropriate! The following bloggers show you how you can take your TWA from the office to the runway and even these streets.

Influenster VoxBox: Pure Leaf Tea

This month, Influenster has teamed up with Pure Leaf Tea for their #pureleafhomebrew campaign. Pure Leaf has launched their first line of tea bags for home use. Now consumers have the option of brewing hot or iced tea from a company focused on all natural goodness and the art of great tea making.018eb49db2d51a77c1d278441c01b221ce56c0cab7

So the new home brew comes in cute plastic jars (reusable YAY!) and contain 16 pyramid style mesh tea bags. The two flavors I received were Black Tea with Vanilla (Hot) and Green Tea with Citrus (Iced). I’ve tried both for just about a week now and I have some thoughts on both flavors. But before I get into those thoughts, here’s what Influenster and Pure Leaf have to say about #pureleafhomebrew:

Pure Leaf hot Black Tea with Vanilla incorporates single origin Indian Assam tea with Madagascan vanilla beans to create a tea-forward taste with a delectable hint of vanilla. Madagascan vanilla is well known for its indulgent taste that lingers on your palate with a long, luscious finish. We use the orthodox black tea leaf with bright marigold petals and flakes of vanilla beans and natural flavoring to deliver a rich aroma and smooth, indulgent taste.
Pure Leaf Iced Green Tea with Citrus uses mildly smoky, single origin Indonesian green tea blended with bold bursts of natural citrus flavors and real pieces of oranges. The rolled green tea leaves with real orange pieces and blades of lemongrass and rosehips delivers an extraordinarily refreshing iced green tea with a tart citrus flavor.

And now that you have a full descriptions of the product, here’s my personal review. I love the look and smell of these teas. I also enjoy the taste of both the green and black teas in general. Green tea is my favorite usually, but I was surprised at how much more I enjoyed the black tea with the vanilla added to it. You can really taste how pure and fresh these teas are. They use real vanilla bean, and real citrus zest, so the flavor is very pronounced. You do have to brew the iced tea, but what’s great about it is that it only takes 3 minutes to brew! Also, both teas taste excellent hot or iced!

For more info, check out my video review below. Thanks again to Influenster and Pure Leaf for the VoxBox. My hubby and I really love them!

Starting Over. Why I Cut My Hair

We’ve all seen it before. A woman going through a life altering moment takes a pair of scissors, or clippers, and cuts off her hair. It’s symbolic of a new beginning. Shedding the past and setting a new path for a brighter tomorrow. One example, which sticks out the most for me, is Angela Bassett’s character in Waiting to Exhale. A real life example would be Britney Spears during her Blackout phase. 2017 is my year to make a life altering move by shedding the past 4 years and restarting my natural hair journey.img_0540

So why now? Well, a lot has happened in the past 4 years. I finished my degree, got married, and lost loved ones. I had a miscarriage, lost jobs, and had to move because the new owners of my apartment wanted to move their family into the units. I also sold my artwork, flourished in content creation and freelance graphic design, hosted a plus size fashion show, collaborated with Youtubers I admire, and reached my 1000 subscriber milestone. I’m grateful for all of it, the good and the bad/sad, but I’m also ready to let go of that which may be holding me back or weighing me down in some way.

I’m someone who is impulsive, but not without thought, if that makes sense. I’ve been thinking about cutting my hair for a long time now. Usually the cure for my cutting fever would be a simple trim and shape of my fro. But lately, I have felt like I needed to break free of my hair. And as I resolve to take better care of my skin this year, and my body through weaning myself off of processed food, sugar, dairy, and gluten, I figured why not also restart my natural hair journey? It felt to good to shed the past 4 years and start fresh. My hair will grow back, and maybe better than before. Maybe I have learned enough to care for my hair in a way that will allow it to truly flourish. Maybe my growth will surpass the last 4 years. Who knows?! We’ll just have to wait and see.

Have any of you cut your hair as a way of starting over or shedding your past? Comment and let me know. I’d love to have a conversation about this. In the meantime, check out my Facebook Live video below. Don’t forget to subscribe to my secondary Youtube channel where I upload my Snapchat stories and occasional Facebook videos.

Sephora VIB Rouge 20% Off Sale

Sephora has a 20% off sale biannually. The Fall sale happens in the first week of November every year, and guess who’s birthday falls around the sale? MINE! I love this time of year because I get to purchase  products I’ve been coveting for the year and re-up on my must haves. Below you’ll find my haul video, featuring the hubby, And a few anecdotal stories about Sephora and their husband deception, incompetent new hires, and my pinched nerves.

Hubby Meals: Fusion Bimbimbap Bowl

Bimbimbap is one of my favorite Korean meals. You can eat it with rice or noodles, but no matter how you eat it, it’s delicious! My husband and I decided to try our hand at a dish inspired by bimbimbap using leftovers from breakfast and lunch. It was a team effort, and one I hope does not offend my Korean readers. I live for food from around the globe. Often the meals I eat are fusions of seasoning and/or recipes from various countries. I would never consider this a real bimbimbap bowl. This is most certainly a western spin on an amazing eastern dish.

img_8680

Along with white rice, fried egg, and kimchi, Solomon and I added leftover curry shrimp from the previous night’s dinner, and homemade guacamole I made earlier that day. Solomon fried up some plantain we purchased from Trader Joes. We barely stopped to breathe between bites. It was one of the best meals we’ve ever had! So let’s see, African plantains, Southwestern/Mexican guacamole, Caribbean/Southern shrimp, and Korean summed up the rest of the bowl. How cool is this meal?! A global union in your mouth. YUM!
